SUNPAK Infrared Natural Gas / Propane Outdoor Patio Heaters - Layout & Design

More Sunpak Links: About These Heaters | Layout and Design | Frequently Asked Questions

ceiling mountingSunpak heaters raise the the comfort level between 5 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit outside. The coverage table below is based upon windless conditions. Under conditions where wind is involved, more heat will be required. A patio that gets a great deal of wind should have wind breaks installed to stabilize the environmental conditions. Wind breaks will not interfere with the ventilation of the combustible air requirements of Sunpak heaters. CLICK THE DIAGRAMS TO ENLARGE THEM TO FULL SIZED VERSIONS.

Angle Mounting

Most of Sunpak's heaters may be angle-mounted up to a maximum of 30 degrees to accommodate mounting these heaters around a patios' edges. Please note that the top clearance to combustible materials increases with the heater is tipped from horizontal. Also please not that local codes may have special requirements regarding clearance. Some local codes may require all portions of any type of overhead radiant heater by located at least 8 feet from the floor.

Patio Design Consideration

sunpak locationIt's critical for the heater to be placed correctly to ensure maximum efficiency of the unit. If these heaters are too close together, or if they are mounted too low, people can get very uncomfortable. If the heaters are mounted too far apart, or they're placed on a windy patio, the units may not warm up the area. Sunpak heaters will work best if they're mounted in the areas of the most heat los, meaning something similar to the open side of a semi-protected patio area The heater can be mounted at at 30 degree angle or also face down. Please note the top clearances are required from all types of combustible material increases when the heaters are installed at an angle. The heaters must always be horizontal to the floor.

Sunpak heaters can be laid out in any number of configurations, depending on how the patio is constructed as well as the heating requirements. One way is to face the heaters directly down over a table / seating area. Another way is to install heaters to the side, angling them inward. Another way is cluster the heaters in the center of the patio area and angle them outward. It depends on how the area is designed.

Wind conditions must be taken into consideration when heating any patio area. The use of a windbreak is very effective in reducing heating costs and improving the comfort level on any patio. Windbreaks should be designed to allow for ventilation and fresh air in order for the heater or heaters to function properly.

Place Sunpak heaters in a location that allows for uniform air pressure around the heaters. If only a part of one of our heaters is in a zone protected by wind, damage to the heater can occur. Please take time to observe how wind might affect the heaters under your area's conditions.

Heater Damage
The correct clearance for combustible materials must be maintained at all times. See the manual for required clearances for different model and mounting options. The Sunpak Heater requires adequate combustion air and ventilation in order to operate correctly and safely. Improper ventilation can generate carbon monoxide and / or other harmful gases that can result in death or breathing troubles. Small or enclosed patios may not be appropriate for this type of heater. Failure to operate Sunpak heaters in a uniform air pressurized environment or under erratic wind conditions can cause controls to overheat and can damage the front grill and burner.

Temperature Control

It is possible to incorporate a thermostat into the heater's electrical circuit. This may not be the most efficient way to control the temperature. Here's why: infrared heats objects and people. When used outside, the heater may not increase the actual temperature of the outside air, and a thermostat would not recognize the heat level.

Using more than one heater is suggested to use individual switches to provide more flexibility in heating your patio or area. Usually the heaters would not all be turned on until needed to heat guests or customers. A master switch or timer can be used to ensure that the heaters aren't on when the patio or area is not being used.
